Archetypes are not marketing language
The gods within our brands
Archetypes are often treated as a branding exercise. Simply pick one of twelve personalities and build a tone of voice around it. This misses what makes them powerful.
Long before we’re influenced by Culture, there is something deeper that animates us. We cry before we speak. We seek warmth before we seek language. We recognise faces, feel fear and play roles long before we are taught to do so. This is the primal code. It doesn’t speak in words. It speaks in drives, urges, images, symbols and stories. It cares about survival, connection, power, safety, pleasure, meaning and transformation.
These recurring human patterns are what Carl Jung called archetypes. Instincts made visible.
The HERO overcomes.
The CAREGIVER protects.
The EXPLORER seeks.
The REBEL breaks.
The SAGE understands.
The LOVER bonds.
Joseph Campbell called these forces gods—not because they live in heaven, but because they represent the mythic energies that live inside us:
“The dictionary definition of a myth would be stories about gods. So then you have to ask the next question: What is a god? A god is a personification of a motivating power or a value system that functions in human life and in the universe—the powers of your own body and of nature. The myths are metaphorical of spiritual potentiality in the human being, and the same powers that animate our life animate the life of the world.”
These patterns existed long before brands did. Across cultures, we have given them symbolic form through characters, stories, music, movies, poetry, dance and art.
Brands simply give those ancient patterns modern form. And advertising is one of the places where we can see them most clearly.
Archetypes in the wild through advertising
The examples below explore brands that have expressed each archetype with crystal clarity.
These aren’t necessarily brands that have formally declared an archetype in a strategy deck.
Through advertising each brand answers the following:
What role does this brand repeatedly play in people’s lives—and what human drive does that role activate?
Let’s look at the evidence.
Archetypes in marketing
The INNOCENT seeks simplicity, optimism, security and the belief that things can be better. At its strongest, the archetype creates a world where goodness still feels possible.
INNOCENT brands often strip away complexity, cynicism and threat in favour of purity, trust, nostalgia or hope.
